In the glass, a deep ruby with purple hue. On the nose, highly perfumed aromas of cherry compote, blueberry and anise are supported by notes of smoky herbs and fresh tobacco. On the palate, a wild array of candied red fruits merges with spice cake flavours for an expansive and concentrated mouthfeel. The wine closes with a long finale building on spiciness and smooth, harmonious tannins.
When Benjamin Bridge was founded as a sparkling wine house back in 1999, the notion of specializing on stylistic pursuits that fundamentally aligned with our unique micro-climate was immediately built into its DNA. To this day, such focus remains a guiding principle, and defines a precise portfolio of wines centered around traditional method sparkling. However, in select vintages, a rare, boutique-size production of red wine emerges, providing grounds for exploration while adding a touch of diversity.
This elusive red wine is occasionally created in minuscule quantity when the stars align to provide a vintage of substantial depth and ripeness.
Recognizing the natural inclination of our ecosystem and microclimate to craft ethereal and vibrant lighter wines, the possibility of elaborating a fuller red wine cannot be taken for granted and is exclusively in the hands of mother nature.
2017 provided such opportunity in spades, considering that the heat units in August and September surpassed the historical average by over 30%. This allowed a newly planted and sustainably-grown parcel of Petite Pearl to mature to unprecedented levels, displaying a degree of phenolic ripeness and a generous tannin structure previously unseen.
Forget the stereotype of a cool-climate red wine deprived of phenolic density; with our decision to sparingly produce this wine only when the circumstances allow, this Taurus possesses a game-changing structural backbone reminiscent of different viticultural pastures far from the north.
