BACK VINTAGE | 2018 Riesling
Regular price $24.05/
What if the hallmarks of great Rieslings happened to align with the most fundamental qualities of Nova Scotia wines: low in alcohol and refreshing, energized by natural acidity, and, more importantly, an ageing ability measured in decades.
It is impossible to approach the subject of the 2018 vintage without referring to a climatic anomaly unseen in decades; a devastating late spring frost (-1C to -4C) on the morning of June 4th occurred well after bud break when the vines were particularly tender. As the plants were in a highly vulnerable stage in their growing process, losses ranged from 20% to 100%, depending on vineyard site and parcel along the Bay of Fundy.
After this frost event, the growing season progressed into ideal conditions for slow ripening to full maturity.
Working with our local grape grower partner and our limited yet qualitatively impressive organic estate yields, this varietal Riesling showcases the distinctive minerality of our maritime terroir with an inviting fruit-forward and refreshing character.
We likely shouldn’t be surprised about the heightened quality of this vintage, given the storied relationship in winemaking between low yields and exceptional vintages. With a reduced fruit load, the vines delivered more energy to a smaller number of individual berries, resulting in higher concentration and flavour intensity.
