FURTHER NOTES

A vintage of true recoil and resilience. In the ever-shifting landscape of today’s climatic uncertainties, grape growing, much like other agricultural pursuits, has faced its share of unprecedented challenges. Not exclusively a heartache of our tidal vineyards nested alongside the Bay of Fundy, many wine regions across Canada and around the world have been impacted by extreme weather events in recent years.

In early 2023, an intense deep freeze rolled through our province, impacting crops of all kinds and reducing our yields significantly. As if that wasn’t enough, the growing season to follow faced additional hurdles with torrential rains, pushing our site’s natural drainage to its limits. Some parcels were harvested earlier than usual to combat excess humidity, infusing the wines with a zest and brightness reminiscent of early Nova Scotia wines.

Against all odds, the first three weeks of October provided an unexpected reprieve in the form of a dry spell, featuring warm, precipitation-free weather that made up for delays in ripening. Those who exercised the patience and foresight to wait for these highly favourable conditions were rewarded with surprising phenolic maturity, further intensified by the overall reduction in yields. As is often the case, the diminished crop proved to be of superior quality as a result of the vines having fewer grapes to bring to full aromatic development. To our delight, the grapes and juices that persevered showcased a vibrancy and crispness, evoking qualities reminiscent of earlier years before our growing seasons started warming significantly in 2016.

This vintage echoes the style and profile of Nova 7's inaugural release sixteen years ago, encapsulating the essence of that memorable winemaking era. This return to its roots is a remarkable outcome in light of the challenges faced, and we take immense pride in presenting a wine that not only reflects our resilience but inspires confidence in the future of our vineyards.
